Bill Corcoan

After 29 seasons with the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Wolves, Bill joined the Rattlers coaching staff in the Fall of 2020.

Bill grew up in Calgary and started competitive running in junior high.  After finishing high school, he attended both the University of Calgary (BComm - 1983) and the University of British Columbia (MSc -1987). During university, Bill competed for the Dinos and T-Birds in cross country running and indoor track.  In addition, he ran hundreds of other races at the local, provincial, and national levels.  In 1983, he placed 12th in the Canadian Marathon Championships in Winnipeg.

Bill started coaching in 1991, after moving to Grande Prairie to teach business at GPRC.  Under his guidance, Wolves athletes won a total of 35 ACAC team and individual medals, 2 CCAA team titles, and 3 individual CCAA gold medals.  Two of the gold medalists went on to represent Canada in the 2011 and 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Running Championships.

Bill’s coaching philosophy is pretty simple: To be a good runner, you have run a lot. He particularly enjoys working with local and new-to-running athletes who have backgrounds in other sports.  The 2014 Wolves women’s CCAA championship team consisted of 6 athletes who all went to high school in Grande Prairie, 4 who started competitive running in college.

Bill has been happily married for 30+ years to Marlene, a 1981 Rattler alum who led her team to an ACAC XC Running Championship.
