Rattlers Recap Oct 7-8

Women's Hockey Drops Both in Inaugural Hockey Home Opener Weekend

In front of a packed house of just over 350 fans at the Moose Recreation Centre, the Rattlers played host to the reigning regular season champion NAIT Ooks. The Ooks came out on the front foot pressing the Rattlers throughout the first period. They would end up outshooting the Rattlers 13-4 in the first frame, but goalie Kinlee Fahselt (1st year, Medicine Hat, AB, UT Psychology) was steady in goal turning away all the shots in that frame. The second period was more back and forth with each team creating chances and trying to get the first goal of the game. Ultimately, another period of no goals were scored as the Ooks outshot the Rattlers 12-8 in the 2nd period. The third period was where the scoring happened but, unfortunately, it all came from the Ooks. Kamryn Aebley opened the scoring 5:19 into the 3rd period on a nice passing play including Bre Martin & Hailey Cruickshank. A second goal from NAIT came from Hanna Paquette 15:37 into the 3rd which sealed any hopes of a Rattlers comeback. The final score finished 2-0 for the Ooks. The Player of the game for the Rattlers was Sydney Ellingson (1st year, Moose Jaw, SK, Nursing) and for the Ooks was Hanna Paquette.

On Thanksgiving Sunday, we returned the ice looking to secure our first win of the year against the SAIT Trojans. Unfortunately, we fell by a score of 5-0 to the Trojans. Four goals in the 1st period were our demise as Sage Barstow got two, Tamryn Ward scored on the powerplay and Kaylee Vader all contributed to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Asha Kailey would add another one in the 2nd period for the Trojans to finish off the scoring. Hayley Whelen (1st year, Medicine Hat, AB, General Studies) finished with 39 saves in the loss.

Next weekend we travel to Olds for a pair of games against the Broncos with Saturdays game starting at 7:00pm and puckdrop on Sunday is at 2:00pm. Both games take place at the Olds Sportsplex.

Soccer Teams Have a Mixed Results Weekend

Our Men's & Women's Soccer teams were in Red Deer for games against the Kings & Queens on Saturday followed by a trip to Olds on Sunday to battle with the Broncos.

On Saturday the women found themselves down early on a girl by the Queens in the 13th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Just prior to the end of the 1st half a Maisa Rebello (4th year, Rio de Janeiro, BRA, Business Administration) got in behind the defense and slotted the equalizer past the diving Queens goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1 heading into the 2nd half. The second half did not produce any other goals and the game finished 1-1. The Player of the Game was Molly Morris.

On day 2 of the weekend for the women they went into Olds but ultimately fell 3-1 to the Broncos. The game started off well for the Rattlers as we took the lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Keandra Leslie (1st year, Kingston, JAM, Business) but it was short lived as three minutes later the Broncos would equalize to tie the game 1-1 heading into the 2nd half. Olds would take the lead 15 minutes into the 2nd half and would add another just 4 minutes before fulltime to finish off the Rattlers.

As for the men they went into Red Deer looking to move up to keep their playoff hopes alive needing to gain ground on the Kings. However, a 2-0 loss would be in the cards for the men as they dropped the game to the Kings. Goals were scored almost back-to-back as Red Deer put goals past Masymilian Slaweta (2nd year, Bydgoszcz, Poland, Sustainable Innovation) in the 35th & 37th minute. Maksymilian would make 8 saves in the loss. Tata Mugisha was the Player of the Game.

On Sunday, the men looked to bounce back against the Olds Broncos and improve on their earlier matchup with the Broncos from September. The Ratters came out firing as they put 4 goals past the Broncos in the first 45 minutes. Felipe Vaalladares (1st year, Juazeiro, BRA, Sport & Event Marketing & Management) got the scoring started in the 21st minute while Yosef Teame (1st year, Asmara, Eritrea, General Studies) added another goal in the 28th minute to add to the lead. Jire Nzeyimana (2nd year, Kigoma, Tanzania, General Studies) & Joel Lehr (1st year, Medicine Hat, AB, Kinesiology) both chipped in with a goal apiece. The Broncos would get 1 more back early in the 2nd half but would not be enough to catch the Rattlers. Maksymilian Slaweta was the Player of the Game.
